About Applied Financial Services

Applied Financial Services was formed in 2001 with the goal of providing applied, hands- on support to sole proprietors and entrepreneurs, as well as corporate professionals requiring outsourced support for special projects.

Our principal, Marlena Carlson, is a career professional in financial management with more than 20 years of experience in multiple financial capacities. She has worked for and supported a variety of constituents in her corporate professional roles, ranging from small-scale retail start-ups to CFOs of Fortune 500 corporations. Throughout her career, she has emphasized customer service and client satisfaction to achieve business success.

Specific areas of expertise include:

• Business Planning: Financial and strategic analysis, risk analysis
• Project management: Professional project teams and monthly financial processes
• Information Systems Development: Functional requirement definition through implementation
• Training: Financial and technical program development and instruction. Particular expertise in translating technical information to non-technical audiences
• Financial modeling: customized, detailed models of business operations to develop pro-forma financials, long term forecasts and business valuation.

Getting to know Marlena Carlson

Marlena holds an MBA from the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis. She and her family are long-term residents of Boulder and are all outdoor sports enthusiasts. Marlena and her daughter are avid horse show competitors (hunters and jumpers), both locally and nationally. She is also an active community volunteer, currently serving as a board member of her homeowner's association and newsletter editor for her son's Boy Scout troop.
